17 Months!

I have been wanted to write a post about Claire at 17 months for a while now and I can finally get it done!  Claire has been so fun and entertaining the last month.  I love that she wakes up every day happy and full of spunk.

Claire and a good friend Liam!  Who knows how they ended up like that?!

Here are a few facts about Claire at 17 months:
  • She has learned to give kisses with her mouth closed and puckered lips.  I often find myself and Claire's stuffed animals being kissed all throughout the day.  I guess that is what I get for kissing her all throughout the day, daughter like mother!
  • Claire has really increased her signing communication.  She signs so much to explain and get what she needs whereas before she would do her signs after a verbal command from me.  I love that she is learning to express herself.  Here are all the words she signs (new ones are first hopefully):  frog, kitty, puppy dog, fish, elephant, flower, cookie, baby, time, hurt, hot, sorry, mom, dad, book, potty, cracker, cheese, water, banana, bird, alligator, apple, milk, drink, all done, eat, more, please, and thank you.  Claire made up her own sign for turtle by kinda sticking her tongue out and making some noise.  We are working on diaper and juice.  She LOVES to watch these Baby Signing Time videos.  We rent them from our local library.
  • Claire points out many of her body parts and loves to point them out on mommy and daddy too.  She points out ear, eyes, eyebrows, nose, mouth, teeth, hands, toes/feet, and belly button (her favorite to find on daddy!).
  • Claire's verbal communication is still pretty limited, but I think that is because she signs so much.  I'm really not concerned about it as she can definitely still communicate with us.  The words she says are ball, bow, hi, ya, cheese, mama, da for daddy.  She says a lot of animal noises: meow, ruff ruff, ssss (snake), oo ee ah ah, baaah, neigh, sound for elephant whatever that is?, some sound like hum, hun for bear, and toot-toot for train or boat.
  • Random, but Claire ate fish for the first time last night and she loved it!  We made fish tacos and the fish was Tilapia.  I think it was a first for her and me.  Her appetite has gone way down the past 2 weeks.  I think she must not be in a growth spurt and because she is teething her 1-year molars....finally!  I have been able to see little white points on each side of her mouth for a week and a half; the points are finally getting bigger, but she still has a long while to go before they are all the way through.  Luckily her disposition has been mostly good so far through the process.
  • Claire has been sleeping 10.5-11 hours per night.  I miss the 12 hour nights, but I will take 10-11 hours of uninterrupted sleep any day!  We are still trying to figure out what the deal is with her naps.  For now, she still takes 2 naps per day, 1.5 hours in the morning and 45mins-1hour nap in the evening most days.  Not sure when to transition to 1 nap because she has difficulty sleeping over an hour when I try 1 nap.  Any suggestions welcomed! :)
  • Claire still loves her puppy dog, loves books, enjoys coloring a little, loving music (she is getting a lot of the hand motions down) and dancing to it, loves baths, brushing her teeth, putting bows in her hair, and being chased by mommy or daddy.  Claire is still a climber and amazes many people, myself included, on what she can get up on.
  • One things she loves to do that scares me to death is pull down the oven.  She can reach up and pull on the handle and down it comes.  Overall she listens pretty well and stays away from it, but every once in a while she does it so we have started putting her nose in the corner as a time out.  I think it is working, but every few days she seems to need a reminder...like last night.  Jacob and I were focused on cooking dinner with both of our backs turned away from the oven.  Claire was in the dining room, but all of the sudden we hear a real cry.  I look over and see the oven open and Claire crying by the couch.  I grabbed her fast assuming she burnt her hands and ran them to the faucet to run cold water over them.  She actually didn't burn anything which I am so grateful for.  I think the rush of heat from the oven on her face is what actually hurt/scared her.  I really hope she learned that the oven is not something to touch from this experience.  We shall see.
  • Claire has been doing great at entertaining herself lately, but unfortunately one of her favorite things to do by herself is to pull out all of her clothes from her dresser.  She also enjoys pulling out all of her toys from her pink box and books out of the bin.  See exhibit A and B below. :)  Doesn't she look so cute and innocent?  Actually, I don't really mind her pulling out the toys/books, but the clothes get a bit annoying.  She just loves pulling out her clothes too much for me to stop her from doing it.  And, I don't mind the clothes too much because I always have her help put them back.  She is really good at helping out in putting her clothes, toys, and books back with lots of encouragement!
