Gates of the Mountains

One of the things I was most excited to do while we were in Montana was to go to the Gates of the Mountains.  The Gates is part of the Missouri River and Lewis and Clark with Sacajawea traveled these same waters when they were exploring.  Meriwether Lewis actually named the Gates of the Mountains as such because as you pass through on the river, the mountains look like they open in front of you and close behind you like a gate.  We often went to this area as kids to go camping or go out on our ski boat.  The water was always freezing, even in the middle of summer!  The Gates offers boat tours that take you on the river and explains the history, special landmarks, and animals of the area.  It was so fun and refreshing to be in such a familiar area and the weather was absolutely beautiful.  I loved the way it looked and smelled and it was very calming for me to be on the water and take in the scenery.

A beautiful bald eagle.  We saw two bald eagles during our tour.  He was was just waiting for us to take pictures of him.  It seems special to see a bird that is a symbol of our nation and was almost extinct when I was younger.  The bald eagle has been successfully repopulated and is one of few animals to be able to be taken off the endangered species list.

The whole family that went.  My mom, Beth and her family, and us!  We really had the best time and I'm so glad we made the time to see the Gates of the Mountains again.
