No TV

Today I took the cable box back to Time Warner.  Jacob and I decided to get rid of cable for the reasons below.

1.  It costs too much.  Jacob and I are trying very hard to pay off our debt from school and one car.  Getting rid of cable (and consequently phone service and receiving slightly slower internet) will save us about $70.00 a month.  Enough said.
2. We waste too much time watching tv.  Most nights we eventually end up on the couch watching some show or another.  The shows we watch are good shows, good entertainment, but it definitely isn't the most productive thing we could be doing.
3.  Not good for the relationship.  As previously stated, both Jacob and I end up on the couch watching tv, but while we are together in proximity, I would say we are not together in more important ways.  Of course we converse about the shows a bit and mention important things about our day, but I feel our time would be much better spent interacting with each other without the distraction of the tv.  I can honestly say I believe our relationship has suffered as a result of watching tv.
4.  Bad example.  I know that later on in life I won't want Claire to be watching much tv.  There is way too much sex, violence, and deviant behavior shown on tv.  I don't want her to think tv is a high priority for us and I think that would best happen if Jacob and I set a good example.

I am going to miss tv though.  I love to sit down after a tough day and veg on one of my favorite shows.  I will especially miss The Food Network and TLC.  Goodbye to all my favorite shows!

  2. You're much better than me. I love a good TV show every once in a while and don't watch nearly as much as I used to :) Richie said he would call Jacob soon by the way about Memorial Day weekend.

  3. We have been living without TV for 2 years and everyone thinks we are crazy (Did the cable company give you a hard time?). Sometimes we miss it but in the long run we always end up with the same reasons for not having TV that you gave. Way to make the jump.

  4. Laurie,
I'm impressed with the two years! The cable company did give us a hard time: "are you sure you want to do this? have you really thought about this? you'll never get this same rate again." they were pretty good at testing our dedication, but we held firm in the end. :)
